Fanny Kemble letter to Dr. Mutter, 1834?

The collection consists of an autographed letter signed to Dr. Mutter, no place, no date (according to a pencilled note in another hand at the top of the first page, the letter dates from Boston, Summer 1834). The three pages containing the letter are in very good condition, apart from some marginal tears, not affecting text. The letter is a long, interesting personal letter from the celebrated English actress and author to Dr. Mutter, probably Thomas Dent Mutter. The letter includes Kimble's instructions on how to play a word game called "raphsody" [sic] and a 32 line poem entitled, "The Lady of the Kienast Tower."

Frances Anne "Fanny" Kemble (27 November 1809 – 15 January 1893) was a British actress from a theatre family in the early and mid-19th century. She was a well-known and popular writer and abolitionist, whose published works included plays, poetry, eleven volumes of memoirs, travel writing and works about the theatre. In 1834, Kemble married a wealthy Philadelphian, Pierce Mease Butler, grandson of U.S. Senator Pierce Butler, whom she had met on an American acting tour with her father in 1832....

Thomas Dent Mütter, Philadelphia, Pa., surgeon and teacher, was bornin Richmond, Va., on 9 Mar. 1811. He received an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1831, then studied medicine in Europe. In 1841, during the reorganization of Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Mütter became professor of surgery there and held that post until ill health forced him to resign it in 1856.
